January Blues is hitting us hard here at FDJ LDN! After a joyous time gallivanting with gay abandon through the festive season, we have landed hard in “New Year Realness”. But fear not, the perfect escape comes in the form of a trip to the movies, courtesy of Vue. We decided to check out the newly refurbished Vue Cheshire Oaks, in order to watch Guy Ritchie’s latest big screen offering, “The Gentlemen”, in what promised to be the best big screen experience. Yes, January may be a hard slog, but a little treat here and there can really ease the pain. Therefore a trip to the flicks at a Vue Entertainment venue is the wee injection of fun, affordable luxury that won’t break the bank. With tickets as little as £7.99 all day, every day at the Cheshire Oaks branch, we could go despite payday feeling like a million miles away! Stepping into the lofty, slick foyer instantly transported us to an exciting, buzzing space which felt modern and luxe. Also, as part of the recent refurbishment, EVERY seat in EVERY one of the 16 cinema screens has been made into a super duper leather recliner – so you can enjoy your film in the ultimate comfort. And we couldn’t wait to settle into ours in style!

We were super excited not only to try the new recliner seats, but also that we knew we would encounter the best in sound and screen quality. This is where Vue Entertainment really delivers as a leader in out of home entertainment and the big screen experience, which was super important to us, especially on this occasion. Because “The Gentlemen” isn’t just any film – amongst its star-studded line up is my very talented friend Jason Wong who I went drama school with. He plays henchman Phuc and obviously I wanted to see him in the best Phuc-ing quality as possible and from our past trip to Vue Altrincham (see our review here), I was hopeful the Cheshire Oaks branch would deliver too.

But first things first, we had to stock up on the essentials – snacks! Anything you want, they have it here – fresh, tasty and well priced. Because a trip to the movies is not complete without an accompanying portion of sweet popcorn, a huge helping of nachos drenched in cheese and two Tango Ice Blasts as big as our heads, which were served to us by the friendliest counter service with the biggest smile. I mean, they put my jalapenos in a separate pot so I could pimp my half of the nachos accordingly, without sullying Mike’s half! Now that is going the extra mile.

Treats in hand, it was time to take our plunder to our seats and boy, was our the refurb hype justified. There is plenty of aisle space on every single row. No more shuffling past people to get to your seat, deciding whether it is better that they get your butt or crotch in their face, as you spill your popcorn over them in the process. You can simply saunter without impacting on anyone’s space and spare your blushes, even if everyone has fully reclined their seat. Once we had found our seats, we were delighted to find that each had their own little adjustable pull out table for laying out snack wares accordingly and a dedicated cup holder to stow your beverage. This touch really made a difference as you can relax without holding onto your treats throughout the film and if you’re clumsy like me, minimise potential spills! Also the arm rests are extra wide, so there’s plenty of elbow room and you don’t feel too close to the person sitting next to you…unless you want to snuggle up.

Goodies arranged, it was time to finally sink into those luxurious leather recliners…and they didn’t disappoint! Cushiony soft, the seats individually adjust through the smoothest electronic buttons on the inside of the seat, so that the chair hugs you like a newborn baby. To be honest, they were so comfy that there was the risk of an unexpected mid film slumber, but the quality of the action on screen, coupled with the excellent sound, kept us wide awake!

As the lights went up at the end of “The Gentlemen”, we agreed that this trip was possibly THE best experience we have ever had going to see a film. Being able to pop your feet up, relax and completely immerse yourself in the movie in ultimate comfort, without any distractions or numb bums, just simply enjoying the best quality screen and sound to match the quality of the film itself was an utter revelation. The chair is like your own private bubble of joy, which you can adjust to your hearts content! To know that this seating is standard across all screens, without paying any kind of premium for that luxury, is a game-changer. We can’t imagine going without recliner seats again to be honest and thankfully future trips to Vue Cheshire Oaks guarantees we can enjoy this VIP treatment every visit at an affordable price tag. Our ethos here at Fashion Du Jour LDN is all about being “aspirationally attainable” and this trip was definitely the epitome of that concept!
