I don’t know about you but when the dreaded word “diet” is uttered, my mind instantly starts to dance with thoughts of endless calorie counting, avoiding social situations, eating bland, tasteless “food” or meal replacement products that make you instantly want to reach for something sinful and, worst of all, feeling starvation pangs. With summer creeping up on us, I had noticed that something else had been creeping up also – the inches on my waistline! A combination of being super busy with work, enjoying nights in at our new home resulting in a overly friendly relationship with the local takeaways, as well as simply enjoying the joy of sitting wrapped in a blanket rather than sweating in the gym, had lead to me thinking my clothes had shrunk. They had sadly not! It was time to get a handle on the situation. But what diet should I opt for? I wanted something that was easy, took the thinking out of what to eat and was real food, not meal replacement shakes or bars. Enter DietBon!

For my first week on the programme, I had to choose 12 meals for lunch and dinner, along with a range of breakfasts, snacks and desserts, as well as an accompanying morning/afternoon and afternoon/evening detox tea (to be drunk 4 times a day). 6 out of the 7 days you eat just the DietBon products and the 7th day is a “free”day where you take a slightly relaxed approach, eating non DietBon food. With 60 plus meals to choose from, it was hard to decide but I super excited! The programme starts atas little as £44 per week. My delivery arrived with an in-depth accompanying “DietBon Guide to Success” to help me through my week and get the most out of the programme. It was full of tips to keep me on track and also recipes for my free day. I also got a 30 minute phone consultation with a Dietician to talk through my lifestyle and how I can adjust the programme to my daily life. There’s also lots of online resources through their website including exercise routines. So I felt in a really good, supported place to get the most out of my weight loss journey.

DietBon is a French company and as such I expected that the food would hopefully be tasty. Well, let me just say THE MEALS ARE UTTERLY DELICIOUS! They blew away my preconception of what diet meals taste like. The sauces were deep in flavour, there were carbs in the options such as the most buttery, creamy mash and deliciously cooked pasta and rice, and the meat or fish in the products were tender, juicy and just cooked to perfection. And yes, there are sweet things hit the spot too!

So what did I love about my time on DietBon? Well, I loved that it took the thinking out of losing weight – no measuring, no calorie counting, no disgusting shakes replacing real food. It fitted well into my lifestyle on many levels: The ready meals don’t have to be kept in the fridge, so I could grab one and keep it in my bag without worrying about it spoiling. You could add fruit and vegetables to the meals too. Milk and yoghurt were allowed and you didn’t have to opt for the fat-free options. Carbs are not the enemy either as pasta, mash and rice were on the menu. There were cereal bars for when I wanted a snack on the go. There were no dreaded shakes to replace meal and the products didn’t scream “I’m on a diet”, so you could happily take them out and about. They are delivered right to your door and all the meals cook in 2 mins – a lazy, busy girl’s dream! Everything is REAL, with 100% natural ingredients and taste high quality. I must admit, I tend to be guilty of missing or skipping meals and this made me really make sure I ate all the food I was meant to during the day.

But as with everything, there has to be a few negatives. I found having a day off a bit tricky, despite being given lots of delicious recipes. I don’t really tend to follow recipes and finding the time to cook from scratch can be awkward and time-consuming when I am running about with work and auditions. Some of the recipes also seemed quite complicated/expensive. I like quick and easy. I felt if I was paying for a 7 day programme, I should get 7 days of food and the pressure on the 7th day (although you can move it to whichever day in the week you like) to not binge made temptation high. I get that the programme itself is teaching you about portion control and healthier choices, but think in the first few weeks a day off is a bit danegrous! Also…having a night out eating was kind of hard with friends, if you didn’t study the menu and be smart with your choices. Going out isn’t “off the menu” during the programme, as they do give tips in the guide, but I did feel this was a challenge.

All this being said, I lost about 4lbs after the week, which felt super easy. The plan encourages healthy, sustainable weight loss (about 2lbs a week) that will ensure you are not yo-yoing with an extreme plan. I didn’t feel like I was starving at ANY point. I felt I learnt to spread what I eat over the course of the day, little and often rather than big, heavy meals. I learnt to plan my day around my food, no matter how busy I was. I recognised that portion control is something I can take forward into my everyday life to sustain losing weight in a healthy way. By having the tea 4 times a day, I increased my water intake easily without effort and felt less tired. The food was really tasty, so I wasn’t tempted to reach for things not on the diet and that carbs (which I bloody love) were on the menu. The day off was a challenge but one I could plan for. I felt that I was resetting my ways of eating and losing weight was a lovely by-product of the process.
