We have spied a trend afoot, fillies! Yes, the funnily named “Lampshade Trend” is striking a cord with fashionistas everywhere and it’s easy to see why. The “voluminous top layer plus Over the Knee boots” mantra is well loved by the likes of Kourtney Kardashian and Binky Felstead because A) it looks FAB whilst being highly flattering and easy to wear and B) it is PERF for this annoyingly chilly time of the year! So, click this way as Leigh shares with you our take on the trend and how you too can get lit up by the Lampshade Trend.
POLONECK DRESS:
Perfect for a stylish and cosy occasion, the fit and flare of a slightly oversized yet short style of a poloneck dress will get you fashion snaps aplenty! This particular beaut is from The Dressing Room Brentwood and is made bespoke by the uber talented lady behind the brand. You can pick a number of styles and materials and they will be handmade with love and care and with you in 7-10 days! We chose this jumper dress in a soft black sparkle material for a touch of understated luxe that will make you stand out from the crowd in all the right ways!
Finishing Touches:
A look this classic needs accessories that are clean and contemporary. So we reached for some classic OTK boots from New Look and these Dotty Earcrawlers from the amazing Louise from LMJewellery. Each piece is lovingly handmade by Louise to order in London using materials bought from local businesses. The collection includes fabulously fresh pieces including precious gemstone set Dot rings and dainty Disc bracelets. But for us, we just had to nab these so cutting edge Earcrawlers to offset our look. We love the tri-colour of brass, copper and sterling silver against the skin PLUS it means that this piece will sit nicely alongside other jewellery, no matter whether gold, silver or rose gold. BONUS! And why not mix and match with other earrings for a fabulously mismatched look? PLUS all of LMJewellery comes delivered in the most #FashionDuJourable packaging, so whether a gift for someone else or a gift to yourself – you are in for a treat. Be sure to check out LMJewellery’s Etsy shop…and be prepared to spend!
SHIRT DRESS:
A lovely addition to your wardrobe should be a shirt dress. It’s super comfy and super stylish. This Vero Moda beaut was on sale and has been a firm part of my A/W look. I spied this utter bargain on Love the Sales, which is an uber handy website to know about as it rounds up all the bargains from the sales of ASOS, Boohoo, Missguided, etc all in one place with handy filters to help you find EXACTLY what you are looking for. So not only are you saving money, you are saving something a lot more valuable – TIME! I love that this particular shirt dress is slightly longer at the back, so no bottom flashes here fillies! Also this colour is just so versatile and yummy!
Finishing Touches:
To set this look off, I’ve added textures and tones of grey (I could have gone for a “50 Shades of Grey” pun here – but we classy right?). I grabbed this River Island men’s trilby in the sale last year and it’s rarely left my head. It’s perfect for this rainy weather (during this shoot it SLEETED), so your hair is protected from a downpour. I popped on my fave flat OTK boots which I got from Peacocks about 5 years ago and they are dead ringers for the Stuart Weitzman or Russell & Bromley offering. Flat Over the Knee boots are fabulous to get the look but also the wearability. Finally, the main event of the outfit – this amazing neck party of a Statement necklace from Aura LDN. This necklace is utterly gorge and dresses up what is quite a casual look. For instance, if you were going from day to night in this outfit, you could have this beauty in your bag to instantly glam up. The variety of necklaces they have on site is awesome, so be sure to check them out STAT.
T-SHIRT DRESS:
As you know, here at Fashion Du Jour LDN HQ we love discovering and featuring up and coming brands and designers in our “On Our Radar” series (check it out here). So we are uber excited to share this Shabba Ranks Oversized T-shirt from designer Duchess Avenue. Be sure to check out Duchess Avenue’s Insta as this lady is super talented and definitely one to watch. We decided to style up this T-shirt as a dress and give it, like, a TOTALLY Clueless vibe to this particular Lampshade look. I love buying a man’s tee or oversized T-shirt to style as a dress as it creates a relaxed and edgy look. Just make sure you get your tee long enough as no one likes a casual bum cheek flash! If you find that the sleeves are way too big/long, an artful roll up on each side adds sass! You are Lampshade trending to the max!
Finishing Touches:
This look is all about kitsch, so add extras that reflect that. I accessorised the look with this Yin Yang Tattoo Choker from Topman (yes, TOPMAN, you read right ladies) and quite possibly my fave quirky ring atm – this gold French Bulldog ring from Barley and Bo. I LOVE Barley and Bo for providing me with great pieces at fab prices, that add flair to an outfit. I adored this ring and just had to have it as I’m obsessed with Frenchies and until I can actually get a real one, this little buddy can adorn my finger instead! To finish off the look, I threw on this fluff-tastic coatigan (part coat, part cardigan) from my favourite local boutique Tiana Marie to fully unleash my Cher Horowitz. Add my perma-fave New Look OTKs and you are ready to go! Is this too much? Ugh – AS IF!
There you have it! My 3 top ways of how to rock the Lampshade Trend. I would LOVE to hear in the “Comments” section below which was your favourite, as well as your go-to tips for how YOU style this trend. Stay tuned to Fashion Du Jour LDN for more outfit posts soon.
Until next time fillies,

I love this lampshade look!! I just don’t know if I am comfortable enough to pull it off! Perhaps I should throw caution to the wind and try it out!!

Thanks so much Lisa! It’s a little out of my usual comfort zone too but it’s surprisingly comfortable. My ethos for this year is to try more things so perhaps it’s worth a dainty dip of a toe lovely? I added black opaque tights to the looks to for a more relaxed everyday feel and to smarten the look, so that might be an option too?

Prefer the jumper look – cleanest and most uncluttered, but like the necklace with the shirt dress.

Great post! I’d love to try this trend but I can’t help but feel it’s still a bit too cold! Maybe in a month or so haha

Awww thanks Jade! YES indeed, I was freezing when doing this a couple of weeks ago. Wanted to show the looks off properly, so didn’t stick on a coat, but of course would throw on a cuddly warm coat and probs pop on some opaques to make it a bit (a lot) warmer 😆
Thanks for stopping by lovely!

I know right Heather – I’m a bit obsessed with this look and playing with proportions etc! You totes should nab a pair – they seem to be getting reduced a LOT becuase we are heading into SS16. So get a bargain and you can wear them until “summer” hits (if it does) and then you can store them away for AW16…because you know they will deffo be coming back on trend 😉
