So, we’re going through a pandemic…not exactly the best of times hey? When boy band Blue joyously sang about “having the city on Lockdown”, I doubt this is what they had in mind! With this new way of living comes new ways of being, as our usual routines are thrown out the window. Mornings are tough at the best of times and now with so many of us working from home due to the current state of affairs, the challenge to be as productive, especially in the morning, is REAL! The urge to stay in bed, stay in your PJs and stay generally unwashed can be a habit that’s hard to shake. But you can lockdown a morning routine that will keep you on track, by encompassing a whole heap of pandemic pampering along the way! So click this way to find out how to be winning too…
Take Time For Breakfast:
They don’t say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day for nothing and for me breakfast is one of the main reasons to get my ass out of bed! So set your alarm for your usual time that you would have to get up to get ready for work. You should therefore be able to have a more leisurely amount of time to eat and get ready for the day as you are not using time commuting. You can use that saved “commute time” to enjoy your “me time” morning routine but can still be ready to clock on at your usual start time, if needed.
Pamper yourself with a selection of hearty and healthy breakfasts, the kind of fare that you’d associate with “going out for brunch”. Be it a full English or that Instagrammable fave, avocado on toast, treat yo’self and start your lockdown morning in a winning fashion.
Soak it in:
Another way to use the extra time in the morning is by having a full on pandemic pampering. Nothing beats soaking away in a bath go to town with treatments such as indulgent bath oils, hair masks and body scrubs. Why not also light your favourite candle and float away for a little bit? If you are after a new tub to rub-a-dub-dub in, Waters Baths have the utimate selection of baths to relax in.
If showers are more your thing or you are a bit pushed for time, whip out your most luxurious in-shower products that you have. I am terrible for “saving things for best” but why not spoil yourself everyday? So crack open that shower gel you’ve been meaning to use – you only live once! Finish off your bath or shower by slathering yourself in your richest body lotion or why not a gradual self tanner…or both? Little luxe moments in the morning can start your day off right and make you feel amazingly energised for the day ahead.
Lockdown is the perfect time to really invest in a good morning skincare routine, trying out new products and seeing what works for you. Because if you do have any kind of adverse reaction…nobody is really going to be seeing you…plus if you are Zooming anyone, you can add that hidden beauty filter right?!
Take the time to cleanse thoroughly, I like to use a balm cleanser with a face cloth. Then layer on a hydrating moisturiser. I have been alternating between a Retinol serum and a Niacinamide serum to get my skin in tip top condition for post lockdown. Retinol can make your skin flake for a period of time as it gets used to its strength, which is why I’m introducing it now – I can ride out the flaking without anyone seeing it! Now is a great time to get into the habit of slathering on SPF, the higher the better, on top of your moisturiser, especially if you are using Retinol and this glorious weather lasts.
Post moisturising is the perfect time to use a gradual facial tanner mist to give you a make-up free glow that will brighten up not just your morning, but your whole day. I always feel I look healthier and can wear less or no make-up with a bit of tan on, saving me time when I get ready. The one I use can also be used a primer or setting spray for make-up which is super handy if I’m having a “full face of make-up” kind of day. At the moment, if I decide I need a bit extra than the glow of fake tan, I’m tending to stick to the basics of a tinted moisturiser with SPF, groomed eyebrows using my favourite powder product and some mascara. Enough makeup as to let my skin breathe but also to not scare anyone on my government allowed walk of the day!
Dress For Success:
Pop on your smart casual clothes…NOW! It’s sooooooo easy to get back into your PJs, trust me I’ve been there, but getting into a “working from home” appropriate get-up instantly makes you feel more likely to work. Now I’m not suggesting a full on power suit, but jeans and a jumper or nice shirt or t-shirt will instantly make you feel more put together, than joggers and a your favourite (probably stained) hoodie ever will. Plus you’ll look more stylish on that unexpected Zoom meeting!
If you are finding it hard to stay focused, write what you are planning to get done in the day the minute you sit down to work. Be realistic though – working from home is full of temptations (like a new episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race) and unexpected things can crop up, impacting on how productive you are. So be kind to yourself with your job list and don’t kick yourself if you don’t get everything done. But feel proud whenever you do tick something off!
If you fancy a pick me up mid morning, I have found a well-timed face mask or teeth whitening strip application whilst tapping away at my keyboard has been a great little lockdown pamper to add into my routine. Working whilst pampering yourself? Now that’s winning!
Negotiating the conundrum of working from home is a tricky one. It can be tough at the best times, but utterly weird in the scarily strange time we are currently living in. In a time of uncertainty, creating something that is certain with your routine can make you feel more in control of the uncontrollable. So developing a winning morning routine for yourself allows for you to be pampered, productive and most of all, kind to yourself will help make your lockdown, whether you are working from home or not, winning!
