Whether you own your own business or are all about that freelance hustle life (guilty!) – creating your ideal home office space is a huge part of being perfectly productive. As the ultimate freelancer Carrie Bradshaw proclaimed in “Sex and the City” – “If I get the desk, the writing will come”. So imagine HOW much the whole of your home office can impact on your inspo? So…how do you create the ideal office space? Well click this way and prepare for your productivity to go through the roof – your dream office space can be a reality…
As you may or may not know, we have moved into our first home and a big part of the move has been the opportunity to create my own space to work from home. As a majority of my work is as a freelancer, creating a place that is the ideal environment to be productive has been super important. So whilst I have been planning, I thought I would share with you what has worked for me, as it might inspire you too with creating your home office!
Take It Outside:
It is easy to fall into the trap when working at home that you aren’t physically GOING to work…so it’s super easy to stay in your PJ’s and watch “This Morning”…and then maybe a bit of “Loose Women”…and before you know it it is 5 0’clock and you are binging Towie repeats. However if you create a designated space to physically GO to work, you will see your productivity pick up ten-fold! Sure, if you have a spare room, that’s great, but if you can, why not build your ideal home office at the bottom of the garden (you’re singing the “Poddington Peas” theme tune now in your head if you are a certain age right?). Creating a garden room space means you can cater your office to exactly how you want it – extra plug sockets, built in storage for all your files, books and documents, heck – why not get a fridge out there? Plus you get to look out on your garden whilst working! By taking your work outside into a separate space, you should find it easier to physically and mentally clock in and out of work mode too. I’m writing this currently eyeing up the plot of land at the back of the garden as I type…hmmm…
Paint With Light:
Dark spaces will drag you down! Make sure your office space is flooded with light – whether it’s natural (another reason to opt for a fab garden room office) or artificial. Position your desk space in the best light possible, preferably by a window. If the space is naturally dark, invest in good lighting above and think about the colours you paint the room. Bright white reflects more light and make a space feel bigger and fresher too. Pastel shades work well too!
Splash With Style:
Your office should be a reflection of your creativity and should be a joy to spend time in. Yeah you are at work, but you should be surrounded by style. If you have clients over for meetings or you conduct any kind of business from your office – impress them with your flair and reflect your business in your decorating choices. It should basically be the physical embodiment of your brand! Think cool wallpaper, great art and ornaments, funky frames and furniture and pops of colour. And let’s not get started on cool storage! From floating shelves, built in bookcases and cool wall-mounted caging to clip your to do lists to – admin and organisation doesn’t have to be dull and can make a serious style statement. Your office doesn’t have to be a corporate nightmare but a joy to spend time in!
Your home office should ignite ideas and help you overcome dreaded writers block, helping make you to be the best kind of “perfectly productive”! Surround yourself with things that inspire you – whether it is framing your favourite motivational sayings to covering your space in your top photography and artwork. You want your eye to wander over “nice things” when you are feeling less than 100% – a visual treat that inspires new thoughts and action. I find putting up pictures of my favourite holidays on the wall in front of me gives a real boost – a visual cue as to push through…because those holidays won’t pay for themselves girl!
One of the most important things is to make your office comfortable – so invest! You are going to spend a LOT of time working there…and sat on your butt-butt. And no one likes an uncomfy butt-butt! So take your time and get the best chair you can that delivers superior substance as well as style. Be sure to get yourself a fluffy cushion, a plush rug or carpet to dig your toes into and of course, a throw to wrap around your shoulders or over your lap when it starts to get chilly!
Follow these top tips and you too can be perfectly productive in your new ideal home office. I can’t wait to show you pictures of the space we are creating in our new home – so stay tuned for updates! If you are after anymore home inspo, be sure to check out all our Interiors and Homewares posts.
