Raising The Steaks: Bar + Block Steakhouse

You know what’s better than a good steak? A GREAT steak, that’s what! But what makes a great steak an UH-MAZING one? When you surround the experience with cosy, comfy decor, yummlicious cocktails and bae of course (I just used the term bae everybody – I may have just vomited a bit in my mouth…warn me NEVER to use it again). On one particularly drizzly “summer” evening a couple of weeks back, we discovered a place that really is raising the steaks! So, click this way and find out what’s on the menu at Bar + Block Steakhouse, Kings Cross…

With its bold brick and orange and white awning – Bar + Block stood out like a beacon of meat-based hope on that rain-soaked July evening. As we dashed across the grey streets of Kings Cross towards the restaurant, we were both thinking that sometimes all you need to warm the cockles of the soul is good, classic food and a great drink to wash it down with. As we crossed the black and white tiled threshold into the restaurant, as oasis of warmth greeted us – both in decor and in service *cue aforementioned cockle warming*. Washed wood mixes with leather booths and brick walls in an eclectically elegant decor that invites you in and makes you instantly feel at home to Pinterest-worthy levels.

As we settled into our high butchers block table by the sublimely helpful and sincerely awesome Shah, our menus were accompanied with a little bit of snack action in the form of steak seasoned popcorn. I must say that being the very epitome of starvation central by this stage in the evening, the unexpected addition of something to nibble on whilst devouring the menu with our eyes was very much welcome. After listening to Shah’s insightful suggestions from the menu, it was a breeze choosing what we wanted!

I don’t know about you, but I am of the opinion that no meal out should ever NOT be in the presence of some obscenely gorgeous bit of a cocktail action! I mean – are you even out if you aren’t sipping on something extravagant looking?! So obligatory #drinkporn was ordered in the form of a Sipsmith Gin Smash for the lady and an Espresso Martini for the gentleman. The Gin Smash was the perfect refreshing drink – tangy, minty, elderflowery goodness with a good kick of mother’s ruin to get the evening of relaxing and eating our fill started in style. The Espresso Martini had a very much welcome bit of sweetness to it, thanks to a welcome dash of Absolut vanilla vodka mixed with Tia Maria, as usually I find them incredibly bitter.

After enough time to enjoy and unwind, but not so long as to wonder where the heck our food was – it was Starters time! And boy oh boy were these the perfect dishes to kick off the meal. Guess what? I went for the non-meat option at the meat restaurant. Go figure! I had opted for the Wild Mushrooms on Toast and oh my goodness – it was just incredible! Cooked in a creamy shallot sauce on a slice of focaccia toast, topped with a perfectly runny poached egg and tarragon – this was utter food porn at its very best. For a place that is all about its meat, this was truly exceptional and so full of flavour from the rich full flavour of the mushrooms and sauce to the buttery meltyness of the bread, I didn’t miss the meat. Seriously, it was such a good portion size you could happily have this as a main or it would be a great choice for brunch. As a side note, if you are of the veggie persuasion – fear not coming here, you will be catered for. There may not be an abundance of fare on offer, as this is a restaurant that is all about that “meat life”, but there are options that I am sure you will enjoy and deliver in the taste department!

Back at meat central though, Mike opted for Burnt Ends to start – which sounded like an utter mystery of a dish, but in reality was the most flavour-filled little pot of pure carnivore-based joy! Crunchy, caramelised and smokey beef brisket pieces presented in a the cutest little ovenware dish was a thing of pure beef beauty. Melt in the mouth, sweet, sticky and spicy – it was heaven! I could have literally eaten this by the spoonful all day, every day.

With our starters safely tucked away for safe keeping in our tummies, it was time for the main event…BRING ON THE MEAT! Upon Shah’s high recommendation, I went for one of Bar + Block’s speciality cuts with its signature steak dish – the 10oz Spiral Cut Fillet. Marinated in garlic and parsley for tenderness and sweetness, this steak is uniquely spiral cut against the grain of the meat, making it super soft and succulent. Accompanied by freshly steamed samphire and beef dripping chunky chips, this is the ultimate steak lover’s dream! I had mine cooked medium rare and it was just heaven on a plate – it was oozing with flavour from the marination, the height of tenderness and my knife cut through it like butter!

Mike had decided to go a bit off-piste and went for the Steak and Kidney Pudding, negating the full on steak experience…or so he thought! It turns out that Bar + Block aren’t mucking about when it comes to making the extraordinary out of the ordinary. Maybe the clue should have been when Mike was asked how he wanted it cooked (rare of course!). Because feast your eyes below – you are not deceived…that is a steak and kidney pudding, served on a bed of sirloin steak?!

Words cannot describe the joy on Mike’s face when this caveman’s delight arrived at the table! Yup THAT’S a steak with a kidney pie! And it tasted as good as it looks – butter-rich pastry encased around soft, melting kidney on top of an impressively rare steak. But the highlight? The rich Malbec sauce that accompanied it. Imagine the best sticky, sweet, spiced sauce – like HP sauce pimped and elevated to unreal standards! Seriously perfect for dunking those beef dripping chunky chips in.

Suitably stuffed but never rude enough to turn down desserts, we rounded out the meal (and our tummies) in style. My poison? The Churros Sundae of course, whilst Mike went for the Triple Chocolate Brownie…because, ya know, chocolate addict reasons and all that! And once again, Bar + Block Steakhouse brought their A game and a huge surprise. Just look at this!

Holy gigantic churros, Batman! Part freakshake, part dessert – 100% delicious. A mightily mega combination of churros coated in cinnamon sugar, served with vanilla ice cream, chocolate and honeycomb ice cream, brownie chunks, cream and chocolate toffee sauce – it was a complete showstopper… and night finisher, in the best way.

Mike’s brownie delivered too – served warm with chunks of chocolate throughout and topped with chocolate toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream, it was gooey, yummy comfort on a plate. All that was left to do was to order coffees (the restaurant serves Costa coffee, which I was thought was a great choice) in order to hold off impending food-induced naps.

Would we come to Bar + Block Steakhouse again? Abso-blinking-lutely! If you are after a relaxed, warm place to unwind close to the bustle of Kings Cross but by no way disturbed by it, this is the place for you…especially if you have been travelling, as it’s a stone’s throw from the station. The staff are knowledgeable, the service is not rushed in any way, even when the restaurant becomes really busy around 7pm. And the food? Just outstanding and great value for the quality of food you get! Myself and Mike are already planning our next visit – because the brunch looks simply divine. Steak and eggs? Yes Please! Bar + Block Steakhouse – you certainly are raising the steaks!
