Clean Sweep: How To Clean Your Make-Up Brushes With Sebamed

Yup, it’s that time of the week to sweep clean and start again…and a great place to start? Well, why not your make-up brushes? Your skincare game may be strong. Your make-up may be on fleek. But these are not two entirely separate entities, our fair fillies. Oh no! In reality, the two things are very interconnected and can impact on each other.  Skin health can be effected by make-up choices and vice versa. That’s why brush hygiene is of utter importance to the face-based fashionista. “Hold on!”, we hear you cry, “We wash our brushes weekly!”. Washing your brushes IS a very important step to flawless application to your skin in order to create a masterpiece. But as any artist worth their Mac Velvet Teddy lipstick knows, in order to create said masterpiece, the foundation to which it is applied to is just as important. Yes, good skin makes for the best foundation, before actual foundation! Sometimes what we choose to wash our makeup brushes in can be what upsets the canvas of our skin. So click this way and discover what we are using that has knocked spots off the competition…and our skin too…it’s time for a clean sweep fillies!

I must admit, washing my makeup brushes can be a love/hate affair. I hate the thought of doing it and the “effort” it entails (which actually isn’t a lot…I must just be uber lazy) but love the results once they are done. Once again my brushes are bouncy and soft. Huzzah!!! And they are back to their original colour! Weeeeeeeeeee! And they smell good! Hoooorayyyyy!

However I had noticed that I was getting irritation and redness on my skin, especially along my cheeks and chin. Not so much rejoicing about that as there was about having the “clean” brushes…hmmmm. Something was afoot and I was determined to find out what it was. It was time to go all Sherlock Holmes on this, declaring the rather catchily named “Leigh and the case of the mystery skin irritant” open (btw…that is NOT a catchy name, that is pure irony).

My skincare is pretty good and regular and works for me. I wasn’t using any new products at that time. The same with my foundations that I use – they are skin-loving awesomes that are just lush (big love to Exuviance and Oxygenetix). However, weirdly, I noticed that the irritation subsided whenever I was having totally make-up free days. Curiouser and curiouser.

As I was washing my makeup brushes virtuously on a Sunday (cleanliness is next to godliness and all that jazz), I reached for my usual bottle of rather lovely shampoo. I stopped cold. Watson, I think I’ve got it! Yes, as lovely and fragrant as my shampoo is and as mild and caring as it is on my hair…perhaps this is what was causing the itchy, redness from which I had been suffering. I mean, would I usually wash my face with shampoo? No! But here I was happily washing brushes I rub all over my face with it. Yes, shampoo is great for cleaning your brushes with as the bristles are techincally “hair” and yes, I thoroughly rinse and wash the product out of my brushes religiously. But…there’s always going to be some kind of residue right? And I was then putting that residue all over my cheeks, chin, eyelids etc. It was time to seek out an alternative – STAT!

For morning cleansing, I am a big fan of a good facial wash, as it just makes me feel a lot fresher in the morning. For the past month, I had been using Sebamed’s Liquid Face and Body Wash in the shower. I love a good multi-tasking product to save time and money and this bottle of beaut is a great all-rounder. It tackles skin flair-ups, is soap-free and has the perfect pH of 5.5 for healthy skin. It also cleans without any kind of drying and is sensitive skin’s bff. As I was lathering up one day, I had a light bulb moment. This product may just be the ideal makeup brush cleaner! If it was this caring applied directly to my skin, then surely it would be ideal for my brushes? I was tempted to grab my makeup brushes into the shower with me right there and then, but I refrained!

When it came to my weekly brush cleanse, I reached for Sebamed. It lathers up just the right amount in the hand to swirl your brushes into and cleans them up a treat, rinsing away easily. I then usually blot my brushes dry with a clean flannel, reshaping them before leaving them to dry flat. For the past 3 weeks I have been cleaning my brushes with Sebamed…and I am glad that my powers of deduction were right! My skin after the first week started to clear and by the third there was next to no redness and I have experienced no irritation since. I am happy to declare this case closed!
